I dream very little, at least I don’t remember dreams except on rare occasions. To be honest the following is just a daydream. Years ago there was a famous preacher who said over and over, “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” About 28 years ago this Preacher and Pastor passed away, after having lived into his 90′s. The church he Pastored once ran over 9000 each Sunday. Today the attendance is about 300. Back then, many people not only attended but also took Jesus as their Saviour.
Lately I have been thinking a lot about this. Few would argue that our great country, America, is in deep trouble. Is there a solution? Is there an answer? Can America rebound and once again be the greatest Nation on this earth? Does it depend on the people or does it depend on the leadership? Perhaps both, but what is it that could revive this nation?
It was Lee Roberson who said that everything rises and falls on leadership. In II Chronicles 7:14 God says this: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Could it be that God gives us the leadership we deserve? Churches by the droves have left or are moving away from the “Old-Time Religion.” Basic fundamental doctrines, found in God’s Book, are being done away with. Someone has said the doctrines are important but not the methods. This is the problem with today’s Churches. First the methods are changed and then the doctrines follow. The Church is changing and, in my opinion, not for the better.
My dream consists of Churches getting back to the old-time religion. Years ago one could walk into a Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregationalist or one of many other Churches and the Gospel of Jesus Christ would be Preached. An altar call would be given, inviting people to come to Christ. Years ago, no one argued over Bible versions and everyone believed that the Bible was the very Word of God. Today it is not so.
Last summer, I drove down an old country road and passed a Church with a large tent set up outside. I thought ‘wow, maybe an old-fashioned tent meeting.’ I stopped and asked a few questions. I was told that the tent was needed in the summertime since many people on vacation would attend. During the fall, spring and winter, the attendance averaged 300, but during the summer the attendance would swell to over 900. I was thrilled that so many would come to hear God’s Word. But upon further questioning, I learned that there was no altar call–only a phone number in the bulletin for anyone who was interested. They have a rock band on Sunday mornings and no evening services. There was no knocking on doors to tell people about Jesus Christ or inviting people to Church. I left very sad and wondered what God thought about all this.
Not long after that, I learned of a Church nearby in Grand Rapids. I had never heard of an emerging Church but the more I learned, the more disheartened I became. They have an attendance each Sunday morning of over 10,000. They teach such things as there is no literal hell, that everyone eventually makes it to Heaven and, from what I have heard, they have a beautiful light show and a rock band.
So this is what happens in my dream. A young Preacher who was asked to preach at that popular Church on a Sunday morning. When the Rock band finished playing, this young Preacher stood behind the pulpit and told the large crowd that Jesus Christ is their Saviour and that means He Saves individuals one at a time. He told how Jesus died for each one of us because each one of us are sinners. He preached hard on sin and said we must repent and believe God. An invitation was given to come forward and, by doing so, indicating that they wanted to turn to God and to Jesus Christ as their own personal Saviour. The aisles filled with people and God blessed in a mighty way. In the next few weeks, the Church called this young man to be their Pastor. Quickly this young Preacher accepted and put out a statement of faith stating that the Bible was the Word of God and the Church believed God. The same thing began to spread throughout America. Whole Churches repented and got right with God.
The next year it was time to elect new leaders in our government. A Bible-believing man ran for president and won. On the first day he made several announcements. The government would no longer spend money they did not have. God would be put back in the schools. We would continue with welfare but only to those who could not work. We would once again practice the Constitution of the United States. Private companies would once again manage their own businesses and the government would only prosecute those companies who violated human rights. A 50% tax reduction would go to all. (I have always wondered how God has never required more than 10% but our government wants close to half of what everyone makes.) Drilling for oil would be a no-brainer. Government would be told to mind its own business. Nuclear energy would be promoted, and every energy source America has would be used to make us independent of foreign sources. Instead of sending billions of dollars each day to countries that hate us, the money would stay here. Many more things should happen but these alone would kick our economy into high gear. Jobs would be plentiful. God would pour out His blessings. Is all this possible? Yes, in my dream, it did happen! More later as I recall………………
